Beers and Sodas, the gas safety risk
Carbon Dioxide gas is more commonly known as dispense gas within the Hospitality Industry where it is used to put the ‘fizz’ in beer and sodas. It is also a natural by product of beer brewing and wine fermenting.
What is not generally realised is Carbon Dioxide (CO2) is a toxic gas and even in small concentrations can have tragic consequences. There have been a number of reported incidents, some with fatalities, caused by CO2 leaking from delivery trucks, walk in coolers and general pipeline leaks on users premises.
The Compressed Gas Association (CGA) and OSHA both strongly recommend the installation of a CO2 alarm in ANY location where CO2 is stored and/or dispensed. While locating the CO2 Mini Bulk tank outside is preferable, this does not mitigate the risk of death or incapacity, as the CO2 supply is piped through the building and leaks can, and do occur at any point on the system.
